Having soup before your meal may also force you to slow down (assuming you aren’t guzzling your soup like a 5 year old drinks it’s milk from their cereal bowl). Slower eating is another technique shown to reduce overall food intake. The main reason behind this is found in the brain – you generally are full much sooner than you realize, but it takes time for your brain to get the signal and react by telling you to stop eating. You are sure to slow down the eating process by eating spoon by spoon and since soup is easier to digest the signal to your brain will generally happen much faster.

Here is something very interesting. We are all told to drink water before a meal right? This method is highly reccomended and although effective, I find it to be short lived. This technique is better with soup! Why? You definitely always want to stay hydrated but having your “water” from a source like soup instead increases satiety (feeling of fullness). It’s thought that when water is consumed separately from food it satisfies thirst not hunger.
